Alex Trebek and Larry King were posthumously honored with prizes at the Daytime Emmy Awards which were broadcast this Friday evening.
Larry passed away at the age of 87 in January of COVID-19 complications and Alex died last November aged 80 after a long battle with cancer.
Both of the broadcasting titans received tributes from their bereaved children, who accepted their awards on their behalf and gave touching speeches about their late fathers.

Annual: The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast was held in Los Angeles on Friday night
Alex won the award for outstanding game show host for his work on Jeopardy! which he hosted for decades and continued taping until shortly before his death.
‘We are so honored to accept this award on behalf of our dad,’ said Alex’ son Matt who accepted the award along with Alex’ daughter Emily.Â
‘For as long as we can remember, he was always so proud to be a part of Jeopardy!, to work on a show that was based on knowledge, risk and the challenge people had to think. He loved every bit of it.’
Emily then added: ‘Over the past 37 years the show became his second family. He was always excited to go to work even during his battle with cancer.’
She continued; ‘He was so fortunate that he was able to do what he loved and we know that he not once took it for granted, so on behalf of his family we thank you so much.’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared virtually at the event and shared his own memories of Alex, a Canadian, whom he lauded for his ‘legacy of giving.’
The prime minister said that the game show host ‘told me he was proud to be a Canadian, and we told him that we were proud that is he is one of us as well.’
Meanwhile United States First Lady Jill Biden credited him with having ‘brought our families together every evening, racking our brains to keep up with the smartest contestants.’
Robin Roberts, who is scheduled to be one of the rotating guest hosts of Jeopardy! next month, featured in the tributes to Alex as did Community star Ken Jeong.Â

Larry on the other hand was bequeathed his posthumous Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding informative talk show host for his program Larry King Now.
His sons Chance, 22, and Cannon, 21, appeared virtually at the ceremony in order to accept the prize and deliver a speech in their father’s honor.

‘Hello everyone,’ Chance then piped up: ‘my name is Chance King and I can tell you all that my dad is looking down on us with a very large smile.’
He added: ‘This last season was a testament to his love for broadcasting and as much as he is gone he is with us in our hearts forever. We love you so much, Dad.’Â

She expressed gratitude for her ‘staff and making me look good and sound good and getting these brilliant stories, and heartfelt stories that we get to share with everybody’ as well as the band.
In a heartwarming touch she shared that ‘I thank you for the award but honestly like so many people are deserving of this – not just me.’Â

The soap opera categories saw General Hospital win for outstanding drama series and direction of a drama series, while The Young And The Restless won for drama writing.

Victoria Konefal of Days Of Our Lives won best younger performer in a drama series while Cady McClain of the same show took home the drama series guest star trophy.

Maurice Benard won best lead actor in a drama series for General Hospital and gave an impassioned speech about Alzheimer’s which plays a central role in his recent storyline.
The storyline involves his character’s father played by Max Gail, who happened to also have won in the supporting actor for a drama series category that evening.
Maurice revealed in his speech that after ‘auditioning’ alongside the ‘incomparable Max Gail’ he found himself sobbing ‘uncontrollably’ against a wall.

He told the show’s executive producer Frank Valentini that ‘I don’t wanna do this story because it’s too hard for me’ only to hear: ‘You’re the star of the show – you’re gonna do it.’
Maurice added: ‘And the truth is, the star of the storyline is Alzheimer’s, such a difficult disease, and I hope one day we find a cure – Max Gail, I love you.’Â
The talk-show categories were a star-studded affair with Jada Pinkett Smith accepting an award for Red Table Talk which she hosts with her daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.

The annual award ceremony, which aired on CBS and Paramount+ on Friday, was hosted by The Talk’s Sheryl Underwood and featured a slew of big name presenters like Gloria Estefan.
Gloria, who presented outstanding lead actress in a drama series, gushed: ‘I’m a longtime fan of daytime dramas with a tremendous amount of respect for the artists nominated for this next award. Their commitment to their characters and the consistency of their performances year in and year out is mind-boggling.’Â
Another award was also presented by Regis’ old co-host Kelly Ripa and her current co-host Ryan Seacrest – neither of whom mentioned Regis.

Kelly reflected on her own first Daytime Emmy nomination which came all the way back in 1993 when she was a young actress on the soap opera All My Children.Â
‘It was actually for best ingenue which is now younger lead actress, because at the time I was younger, but I’m not gonna tell you what year that was,’ she quipped.
