UK weather: Snow and flood warnings as Brits brave 70mph winds on miserable Mother’s Day

UK braces 70mph gusts forecast on the coast and the wild wind and rainy weather hit on Mother’s Day.

The strong breezes will continue after reports of 100mph gales this weekend, followed by sunshine and blankets of snow covering parts of the North Yesterday.

Areas in Keswick, Cumbria, and parts of North Yorkshire were also under flood warnings yesterday. Three warnings are in place this today at Keswick, the River Ouse at Naburn Lock and The River Burn from South Creake to Burnham Thorpe.

Scotland was issued with a yellow weather warning following 5cm of snow covering parts of the country as well as areas in the north of England.

Temperatures were also expected to descend below freezing in some areas on Saturday night as the wind kept on blowing.

Many areas of the UK will still be feeling the breeze. However, there will be sunny spells at first with showery rain expected to move over Northern Ireland before spreading southeastwards over England and Wales by this afternoon.

Showers are also expected in Scotland but parts of southern England could be dry for most of the day.

Thankfully winds will ease overnight with Monday expected to be much milder with cloud, scattered showers and some sunny spells.

Speaking yesterday, BBC Weather forecaster Owain Wyn Evans said: “The low pressure that is driving our weather at the moment is positioned to the North.

“It is swirling all of these weather fronts away and it is also bringing us these strong winds.

“Further heavy showers will be moving in from the North West. Some of these showers will be turning wintry on hills.”
