Adele premiered new songs from 30 during a CBS special on November 14. The program also featured an interview with Oprah Winfrey. She previewed “Hold On†in an a holiday-themed Amazon advertisement after revealing the album’s full tracklist at the beginning of November. Next summer, Adele will take the stage for two nights at Hyde Park in London, her first live shows since 2017. She has not yet announced further tour plans for the record, and nixed suggestions of a Las Vegas residency in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
An Adele album release is a global event, a unifying moment in an entertainment world that has long ago stopped functioning as a monoculture. Blockbuster album sales and smash singles occur every few years, when the British superstar leaves her creative cocoon and graces us with her presence; her top 40 sensibility is reliable, her vocal brilliance is undeniable, and the way she shrugs off genre trends and increased expectations of artistic output in the streaming era makes her a singular figure in the pop stratosphere.
30 follows 2015’s 25, which took home Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2017 Grammys. That album’s single, “Hello,†won the awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Last fall, she returned to Saturday Night Live for the third time, hosting for the first time instead of appearing as the episode’s musical guest.
