It’s been announced that SpaceX will offer the “first all-civilian” flight into the Earth’s orbit during the fourth quarter of 2021.
Bosses at the space giant revealed that American businessman Jared Isaacman, 37, who made billions in the credit card industry has charted the monumental flight.
It comes after the space giant which was founded by Elon Musk became the first private mission to fly astronauts to the International Space Station back in 2020.
Jared Isaacman, who is also a qualified pillow will be taking control of the special flight which has been named “Inspiration4” aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
No astronauts will be involved in the flight that is believed to be a “multi-day journey” with Elon Musk stating that if people want to travel for more than four days, “that’s fine”.
Isaacman has also donated the three remaining seats to “to crew members who will be selected to represent the mission pillars of leadership, hope, generosity and prosperity,” it was announced.
The group hope to raise around £146,000,000 for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, which treats children suffering from cancer.
While it has already been confirmed that a healthcare worker at the hospital has been chosen for the flight, another seat will be given to a lucky winner who donates to the hospital, with the selection being made this month.
Speaking about the historic occasion, Isaacman said that it had been a “lifelong dream” as well as a “step towards a future in which anyone can venture out and explore the stars”.
He added: “I truly want us to live in a world 50 or 100 years from now where people are jumping in their rockets like the Jetsons and there are families bouncing around on the moon with their kid in a spacesuit,” Isaacman stated.
“I also think if we are going to live in that world, we better conquer childhood cancer along the way.”
Those lucky few who are given a seat on the flight will undergo extensive training at SpaceX HQ using their Falcon 9 rockets, while Isaacman is hoping to take them into the mountains to experience extreme weather.
