Nike’s new PlayStation trainers are proving even more popular than PS5 consoles following a huge surge in demand.

The PGS PlayStation 5 Colorway saw its pre-release demand skyrocket by a staggering 8,900%, according to footwear retailer The Sole Supplier.

If those figures are accurate, that would easily beat the PS5, which saw a 308% rise before launch.

Reportedly inspired by the next-gen console, Sony teamed up with Nike and NBA star Paul George to create the sneaker.

Following on from previous collaborations between Sony and the basketball player, the trainers’ tongues feature the PG and PlayStation logos.

The colours of the footwear are inspired by the industrial design of the PS5, with references on the sock liner and outsoles.

The sneaker also features the PlayStation shapes in the same pattern as on the DualSense wireless controller.

Being a basketball shoe, the PG5 is said to be lighter than its predecessor, with the PG4 strap and a lot of the rubber from the outsole and midsole removed.

The PlayStation 5 is one of the most difficult consoles to get hold of right now, despite almost 8 million units being sold since launching in November last year.

“If the availability of the upcoming trainers is anything like that of the console they’re based on, expect the shoes to be hard to find once they’re released, with a very high resale value,” a statement from The Sole Supplier said.

“The PlayStation 5 itself is reaching upwards of £800 on resale sites, which suggests that any PS5-related products could see the same attention.”

It is not the first time Nike and Sony has worked with Nike on footwear.

The global brands released the “PlayStation Air Force 1 Low back in 2006, which The Sole Supplier says can fetch more than £43,000 on the resale market, as well as others for Los Angeles Clippers forward George.

The PlayStation x Travis Scott x Nike Dunk Low, of which only five pairs were made as a promotional sneaker around the PlayStation 5 release, saw resale prices hit a whopping $100million (£72m) in the US for a size US12 last month on StockX.

The PG5 PlayStation 5 Colorway will be available in some areas from May 14.
