Aldi shopper’s $20 weekly shop divides customers

It’s no easy feat to stay within budget when doing your weekly shop – which is why one Aldi customer’s receipt showing they bought groceries for under $20 is nothing short of amazing.

However the Aldi customer’s weekly shop has also sparked a surprising debate, with others claiming the grocery haul was “unhealthy” and missing essential items.

In a Facebook post shared to the Aldi Fans Australia group one man shared how he had bought “roughly a week’s worth of food”.

The haul included pasta, eggs, mandarins, bread, spinach dip, frozen veggies, coleslaw, almond milk, mi goreng noodles, bananas and baked beans.

In the comments the shopper shared his receipt, revealing he had bought the groceries for just $19.96.

The Facebook post has since racked up hundreds of comments, with many shoppers taking issue with the lack of meat and dairy and claiming there was “so much processed food”.

“Where’s your protein?” one person asked, while another said they “would starve” eating only that amount of food for a week.

“There is hardly any veg there, certainly not five a day,” another commented.

“But where’s the meat?” one shopper commented.

“Cheap, doesn’t look too healthy. Anyway you get what you pay for,” one person also wrote.

In response the shopper wrote that he would definitely “add in cheese, peanut butter and coffee next time” and explained he hadn’t purchased meat because it was expensive.

But others defended the Aldi customer’s cheap shop, saying it was plenty of food if you were on a budget.

“That’s very impressive,” one person wrote, while another said it was classic “student food”.

“If I had $20 for one for the week I would totally be on board with this plan,” another commented.

“Well done and thanks for showing people you can eat well on little if needed … we are a privileged society but not everyone can spend over $500 on shopping a fortnight.”
