You can now rent a room in the legendary Versailles estate (and yes, they’ll let you eat cake)

Childhood fantasies mingle with opulent maximalist dreams at this first-of-its-kind hotel, which is set to open early this year. The Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle, is thrillingly located within the grounds of the infamous Versailles estate, which was home to King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette in the late 18th century. While the mansion was eventually opened to the public as a museum, non-royals have never been able to make themselves at home — until now.

The complex spreads across three historical buildings on the premises, including what once used to be the monarchy’s version of a ministry of finance, but will house just 14 luxury rooms, each with a stunning view of the palace’s iconic garden. Attention to period-specific detail is key to the hotel’s vibe. The French hoteliers — who are also behind a small collection of boutique hotels, including Courchevel, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s go-to ski spot—and interior design team spent four years studying archives and carefully restoring the decor, from grand four-poster beds draped in bespoke floral fabrics by legacy French companies to shimmering glass chandeliers.

So while that means you aren’t likely to find a TV in your suite (when in France, Netflix can wait), you will get to enjoy 18th-century — and, in some cases, original — flooring, furnishings, art and antiques. The in-house restaurant is helmed by acclaimed French chef Alain Ducasse, who has also looked to the past for inspiration in creating his menu, which means you’ll be getting to sample modern versions of royal staples, like veau à la bourgeoise.

Also included on the grounds are a serene 15-metre indoor pool, a dreamy spa by Valmont and a dedicated salon room for mingling, relaxing or reading, so you can best channel your favourite Keira Knightley period drama. The most regal experience of all, however, is the exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the palace. Starting from $2,600 (which includes dedicated butler service), guests will get to trace the footsteps of Marie Antoinette after hours (read: no bothersome tourists), plus get special access to certain areas of the manor, including a small private garden. It’s the stuff fairy tales are made of.
