Boris Johnson jokes that he is ‘like OJ Simpson’ as he struggles to put on a pair of plastic gloves on a visit to vaccination centre

  • PM caught by a microphone making  reference to the famous 1995 murder case
  • Simpson acquitted of 1994 murder of ex-wife and friend after sensational trial
  • Part of his defence was that glove found at the scene was too small for his hand

Boris Johnson made a bad taste joke that he was ‘like OJ Simpson‘ today as he struggled to put on a pair of gloves.

The Prime Minister was caught by a microphone making the reference to the famous 1995 murder case as he wrestled with the latex hand coverings during a visit to a Welsh vaccination centre.

As a helper at the Cwmbran site suggested they could try a different size he was heard to say: ‘I’ve got it, I’ve got it, I’ve got it … it’s like OJ Simpson.’

Simpson, the former Naked Gun actor and American football legend, was famously acquitted in 1995 of the murder of his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Part of his defence in the lengthy televised trial was that he could not get his hands in a pair of gloves found at the scene because they were too small for him, prompting his lawyer to utter the famous line: ‘If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.’

On June 12, 1994, Brown Simpson and Goldman were killed and Simpson quickly was transformed in the public mind from revered Pro Football Hall of Fame hero to murder suspect.

The so-called ‘Trial of the Century’ lasted nearly a year and became a national obsession. Simpson was acquitted by a jury in 1995 and has continued to declare his innocence. The murder case is officially listed as unsolved – but the public’s fascination continues.

The families of the victims subsequently filed a civil suit against him, and in 1997 a civil court awarded a $33.5 million judgment against him for the wrongful deaths of his ex-wife and Goldman. Some of his property was seized and auctioned but most of the judgment has not been paid.

He later served a nine-year prison term for an unrelated robbery-kidnapping in Las Vegas.
