Thousands sign petition for a one-off bank holiday to celebrate the end of Covid-19 when pubs reopen on June 21

Almost 30,000 people have signed a petition to urge the government to grant a once-off bank holiday to celebrate the end of Covid-19 restrictions.Â
Under Prime Minister Boris Johnson‘s recovery roadmap, the vast majority of Covid-19 restrictions should be lifted by Monday, June 21 – the longest day of the year.Â
The petition, which passed 10,000 signatures yesterday, now requires a response from Government.Â

The five-point plan identifies specific dates where restrictions will be lifted. The impact of the changes will be monitored before further restrictions are liftedÂ
A once-off bank holiday could be granted by Royal proclamation.Â
The petition, which was started by David Metcalf in November, identified June 21 as an ideal day for an extra bank holiday.Â
After Mr Johnson announced the date as a key part of his easing of lockdown restrictions, thousands of people signed the petition.Â
Once 100,000 people sign the petition, it will be debated in parliament.Â
According to the petition: ‘We’d like the government to create a one off Bank Holiday, to be known as Merriweather Day, on Monday June 21st 2021 as an opportunity for families and friends to come together.’Â
The petition recognises the sacrifices made by families who have not been able to meet up for much of the past year.Â
Mr Metcalf added: ‘This proposed bank holiday would help families and friends of all faiths and none to come together to celebrate.Â
‘We’ve chosen the longest day of the year as it provides for the most opportunities to be outdoors in a COVID19 safe way.’Â
