A designer duo’s guide to where to dine, drink and shop in Ottawa

If your last time in Ottawa was a school trip to Parliament, you’re missing out on the capital’s recent small-business boom. “It’s changing quickly,” says east-end local Sacha Leclair, co-founder of Leclair Decor, a top interior design firm serving clients across North America. “We were viewed as the underdog for a while,” adds co-founder Melissa Leclair of the city’s reputation, “but I think we’re pushing past those labels.”

In fact, the married couple are part of Ottawa’s climbing cool factor. They run LD Shoppe, a trendy decor store in Ottawa’s Train Yards district. Post-lockdown, they’ll be launching a gift boutique within called LD Market, where you can browse candles, bath bombs, kitchen items and more, many from local brands.

With their bustling business (and inspo-packed social channels), two kids and two new builds underway (a future family home and a luxury rental cabin), the Leclairs pack a tight schedule. But in their downtime, these are the spots they love to support.

For dinner in a chic setting: Mati (428 Preston St., Ottawa)

This Mediterranean spot splits their menu between crudo (think: yellowfin tuna drizzled with yuzu dressing and miso mayo) and charcoal-grilled meat, much of it sourced in Canada. And while the 48-ounce tomahawk might steal your attention, it’s the contemporary decor, of course, that gets Sacha. “They have a really nice interior and a fun atmosphere for a night out — and nice lighting.”

For playful craft beer: Stray Dog Brewing Company (501 Lacolle Way, Unit 4, Orléans)

As the city’s food scene has exploded, so has the selection of sips. “Stray Dog makes some really special beers — we’ve become friends with them,” says Sacha. Expect fun flavours like cucumber, blueberry or peach on tap, but his go-to is the classic New England IPA, called Shaggin’ Wagon (look for the “Dumb and Dumber” dog-shaped van on the can).

For cheeky apparel: BBxCollection (31 York St., Ottawa)

This ByWard Market boutique is like an Instagram feed come to life: Picture every quippy saying you’ve seen on the grid, now ready to wear. You can nab a “Shot Girl Summer” T-shirt, a crewneck emblazoned with “I could really go for some precedented times,” or a simple “Ottawa” sweater. The shop designs and screen-prints all apparel in-house, and recently expanded into skin care, headbands and other goods. “It’s all really cute,” Melissa adds.

For stunning florals: Maison Anthea (815 Somerset St. W., Ottawa)

“Maison Anthea creates really beautiful bouquets and we’ve been obsessed ever since we first saw them,” says Melissa. “We often give them as gifts to our team or clients — they’re like works of art.” If you’re looking for something that will last the trip home, take your pick from the Dri Bar: The arrangements, made with imported and house-dried stems, range from elaborate bouquets to eucalyptus bunches to hanging pampas hoops. What prettier souvenir to bring home?
