Ausounds AU-Stream earbuds review: Jagged sound at high volume dents the appeal

We’ve had a good run of decent earbuds recently and these AirPod-alikes are the latest vying for your hard-earned cash.

Ausounds aims to be a leading tech company when it comes to professional audio, working with songwriters and music producers and is putting a lot into it’s AU-stream buds.

The wireless tech is very light in the hand and has a nice glossy finish when popped out of the charging case, which in itself it tidy and compact.

They look swish in the ear too and are a bit longer than other similar earbuds, which means the mic in the bottom of the bud sits closer to the mouth, good for talking on the phone.

The AU-Stream earbuds are compact

They’re waterproof, with an IPX5 rating, so you don’t have to worry about raindrops ruining your music when you’re out and about.

And the charge case, combined with the charge in the buds, gives you about 17-and-a-half hours of play, which is pretty awesome. Thanks to quick charging you can have a full battery in as little as an hour-and-a-half.

All good so far.

My problem with the AU-Stream is with the actual sound.

The AU-Sounds looks great in the ear
They have 13mm AU-Titanium Drivers

They’re very good generally at lower levels but when you pump these bad boys up to high output you get a fuzziness creeping in.

Compared with our recently reviewed Sennheiser CX 400BT buds, it’s noticeable and gives the effect of an uncomfortable jaggedness around the edges of a song where other similar buds are much smoother and easier on the ear.

It’s as if the 13mm AU-Titanium Drivers are being pushed too hard when you crank the volume, resulting in a quality loss that’s hard to unnotice.

It’s a shame, because everything else in these earbuds is in our ‘thumbs up’ category.

Charge lasts some 17-odd hours and the charge case is small compared to other earbuds

So some work to be done now on the overall quality of sound across all volumes. With that fixed everything in the AU-Stream design will fall into place.

But for now, we have a decent set of lightweight earbuds, with a long lasting battery but slightly deficient audio quality at high levels.

VERDICT 3/5
