Police in Thailand have reportedly arrested six Britons after they raided an illegal party at a bar in a crackdown on suspected coronavirus rule-breakers.

The British tourists are among 89 foreigners who were detained alongside 22 Thais after police stormed the Three Sixty Bar on Koh Phangan island.

Colonel Suparerk Pankosol, who is superintendent of the provincial immigration office, said the party was illegal under a national state of emergency declared last March to tackle Covid.

Colonel Pankosol said his team had tracked the party down after seeing tickets advertised online for 100 baht (£2.43), Sky News reports.

Among the foreigners arrested include 10 Americans, 19 French nationals and tourists from 16 other countries.

The owner of the bar and a person selling drinks in the bar have also been detained among other locals, according to Colonel Pankosol.

Sky News reports that between 20 and 30 of the detained tourists were still in police cells as of Wednesday evening UK time, as they had not posted bail.

All 111 people arrested in the raid are due to appear in court on Thursday, facing charges of breaking regulations put in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

The penalty for violating the nation’s state of emergency is up to two years imprisonment and a fine of up to 40,000 baht (£972).

Since April last year tourists have been banned from entering Thailand.

Most of the foreigners who were arrested were on tourist visas but had stayed in the country due to the pandemic.

Koh Phangan island is a popular with backpackers.

There have been 15,465 cases of the virus in Thailand with only 29 of those in the Surat Thani region where the party was being held.

However 11 of those 29 cases have emerged in the last month.
