Ask most brides how they felt about their wedding, arguably one of the biggest days of their life, and they will all have a rather lovely answer.
New bride Jony was no different – her day was filled with joy, family, love and affection.
Where her story might differ from a lot of other brides’ is what she and her new husband Alistair did shortly after their ceremony – and the significance of it.
The newly-wed lovers shaved their heads on the dance floor as a surprise show of solidarity to Jony’s mum Luna, who was previously diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
And they looked absolutely incredible – as you’d expect.
Proud mum Luna Macapagal, from Auckland, New Zealand, was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2018.
Last year, she went through surgery and chemotherapy, as well as radiation treatment and medications to keep the cancer at bay.
Since then, she has sadly passed away – but she was able to attend her daughter’s wedding.
Jony, 20, decided she wanted to surprise her mum by shaving her head in solidarity.
Ahead of the wedding day, then-fiancé Alistair suggested they go one step further by doing it on their big day,
When the big moment came on their wedding day, Jony said “we didn’t really know what to expect but we were so happy in the moment. “.
After the ceremony at Allely Estate in Kumeu, New Zealand, on November 21, the couple took to the dancefloor, where Alistair first sat as Jony started to shave away.
Onlookers could be seen crying and laughing as as Jony swapped places and Alistair shaved off his new wife’s hair.
Alistair said that he wanted to show support to Luna as part of a sign that people with cancer are never alone in their journey, and that they will always have support.
Sadly, Luna died on January 12 2021, with the couple deciding to share their story to raise awareness.
Jony said: “We were so happy to see how happy and proud it made her. We didn’t really know what to expect but we were so happy in the moment.
“The responses were very unexpected, everyone at the wedding was crying and telling us how proud they were.
“We have received donations from all around the world which was also very unexpected, and we are so grateful to those who have donated or offered words of support.â€
