The Australian government is speeding up the establishment of its planned $1 billion (US$750 million) Sovereign Guided Weapons Enterprise, which aims to boost defense production capabilities as the country faces a deteriorating security outlook.

The Defense department will now start selecting a strategic industry partner to operate a sovereign guided weapons manufacturing capability to produce missiles and other weapons on the government’s behalf .

The new enterprise will specialize in guided missiles for use across the defense force.

The increasing assertiveness of China and Australia’s deteriorating relations with that country, as well as the lessons of Covid, have strengthened the push for greater sovereign capability.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will announce the acceleration in Adelaide on Wednesday. “Creating our own sovereign capability on Australian soil is essential to keep Australians safe, while also providing thousands of local jobs in businesses right across the defense supply chain,” he said.
