In South Africa’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve, a revamped luxury lodge promises a wild stay

If your definition of adventure is sleeping by the lions’ den, andBeyond Kirkman’s Kamp in South Africa promises proximity to the wild — and all your creature comforts, too. Located in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve on the borders of Kruger National Park, the conservation-minded lodge is legendary for close encounters with leopards, elephants, rhinos and hundreds of other species all calling the vast region home.

The luxury retreat is newly reopened after renovations brought a modern twist to the historic 1920s-era vibe. All of the camp’s 12 homey cottages (starting at $977) have been completely redesigned with a touch of glam. A private bar and serene outdoor seating areas have been added to each, while eye-catching wallpaper murals capture the immenseness of Bushveld scenes. Bathrooms have also been redone to include lavish showers and nostalgic finishes, like embossed tiles and ribbed glass and marble.

The public spaces at Kirkman’s Kamp have been revamped as well. Light wooden floors and textured lampshades warm up lounge areas, while a coffee bar has been added to the expanded dining room. Accent pieces pay homage to the one-time farm’s history, with photos and personal mementos from the lodge’s namesake (and former owner) Harry Kirkman adorning the walls.

On-site features include an open-air, firelit boma where pan-African dinners are served under the stars, a sparkling pool overlooking the Sand River and a peaceful library stocked with classic reads. The camp also has a relaxing massage sala, but for a real treat, guests can request holistic in-room treatments that use natural skin care brand Healing Earth.

With the exclusive access that Kirkman’s Kamp has to more than 10,500 hectares of terrain to explore, travellers aren’t drawn here just to stay within the lodge, of course. Twice-daily game drives, one in the early morning and one into the night, are led by expert safari guides and trackers, who work in partnership with local groups to contribute to the camp’s conservation efforts.

Guided bush walks are also offered, where you can learn how to track and get closer to smaller animals like zebras and impalas.
