Is this the most serene hotel in the world? A luxury hotel opens on Greece’s iconic party island

Mykonos, Greece, is well known among thrill-chasing tourists and island hoppers for its riotous party scene. But Kalesma, set on a hilltop overlooking Ornos Bay, aims to introduce a much more tranquil pace when the swanky boutique hotel opens its doors this month.

Despite its proximity to some of Mykonos’s most popular beaches, Kalesma (Greek for “invite”) fosters a private-oasis atmosphere amid five acres of pristine land. In its former life, the site used to be a family property, passed on through generations.

The hotel’s soothing, minimalist look was envisioned by K-Studio — the award-winning architecture firm behind multiple dreamy Greek hotels, including the Dexamenes Seaside Hotel on the west Peloponnese coast — and Greek interior designer Vangelis Bonios, taking inspiration from Mykonian tradition.

Natural hues and textures, like cool taupes, beachy whitewashed walls and rustic stone, are used throughout and materials were sourced locally. Rooms also showcase original art by Aleksandar Vac, who’s noted for contemporary ceramics reminiscent of classic Cycladic esthetics.

The lobby is outfitted with gallery-worthy modern furniture by Rick Owens, including a wooden sofa and armchair — making this the first hotel anywhere to have pieces by the acclaimed designer, best known for his fashion.

Each of the 25 suites (from $1,811) and two luxury villas includes a private patio, a personal heated pool and sublime views of the Aegean Sea. The airy, three-level villas — with enough space for groups of 6 or 8 adults — also come with a Technogym-equipped fitness room, a fully stocked fridge and the option of a private chef.

Wander outside your room in the morning and you may notice the irresistible scent of horiatiko bread, baking in a brick oven at Kalesma’s restaurant, Pere Ubu. Located at the property’s peak, right by the infinity pool, the relaxing space is meant to serve as the hotel’s lively social hub. At sunset, it’s an idyllic spot to enjoy family-style traditional fare (including local cheese and fresh fish) and revel in the carefree Greek island life.
