Mum’s $29 Bunnings light fix

Lizzie Ellis, from Adelaide Hills, was on the hunt for a rattan light shade which can cost upwards of $200.

However, instead of forking out the big bucks, the savvy mother-of-two opted for a much cheaper alternative.

“I have always wanted a pendant in the bathroom but they can cost like $240 and I just couldn’t justify it,” Lizzie told news.com.au.

“I had been keeping eye out for a nice shade basket and one day I was in Bunnings and spotted exactly what I wanted.”

Lizzie ended up buying a $29 basket designed for plants, cut a hole in the bottom and hung it over the old light.

“It saves so much money, while still looking good.”

She emphasised she uses an LED light bulb so it doesn’t emit any heat.

“So it’s safe and not a fire hazard. With a normal globe it would produce heat and be a fire hazard,” Lizzie added.

The mother-of-two shared her affordable and quick fix in a popular Bunnings Facebook group, attracting almost 1000 likes and comments.

“Great idea – gonna copy!” one keen woman wrote.

“That’s some diverse thinking right there & a big WOW for the end result!” another added, while a third wrote: “OMG stunning. Well done.”

To achieve the look, Lizzie took the light fitting off and traced it around the bottom of the basket.

She then cut the shape out with a sharp knife and slipped it over the light fitting which had a crevice for it to rest on.

“Everyone always posts such cool things in that group and I just whacked this up to see what people thought and they were saying how cool it looked,” Lizzie said.

Some shared similar hacks with one woman posting a photo of her creative, rattan light basket.

“Just did the same yesterday!” she wrote.

“Using the plastic cover which covers the threaded part, hole cut and cover is screwed back on once basket pushed on.”
