New PS5 ‘tournament system’ update ‘could make it better than Xbox Series X’

PlayStation 5 gamers could soon enjoy a better online experience than their Xbox counterparts.

Sony is reportedly working on a new exclusive update, which will enable PS5 users to benefit from a “PSN tournament system” across all of its multiplayer games.

This would mean multiplayer games that don’t typically offer competitive matches online the chance to do so, enabling developers to incorporate an Esports element without the need to build tournament systems themselves.

It would also independently track the final results of matches inside the game to create a fairer system.

Sony has already patented the “ambitious” concept, according to Gaming Intel.

As part of its plans, the video gaming giant’s PSN platform could “generate tournament brackets and then, using real-time data and gameplay tracking, be able to tell who won and schedule the next matches in the tournament”.

Exactly if or when the update will be released remains unclear, but it appears Sony is keen to introduce it sooner rather than later.

The PS5 and Microsoft’sXbox Series X have been vying for supremacy in the gaming market since they launched in November last year.

Xbox’s ‘Game Pass’ system has helped the console’s popularity as it allows subscribers access to more than 100 games.

But the latest rumours of the new PS5 update could give it the competitive edge of its closest rival.

Both console makers have struggled to meet public demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic affecting shipments and a global shortage of semiconductors.

However, the scarcity has done little to hamper their popularity – largely thanks to their far superior technical performance over legacy consoles and the abundance of next-gen games now available.

The sheer power, stunning 4K visuals, and enhanced processing speeds have captured the imagination of gamers across the world.

In terms of internal specs, the PS5 and Xbox Series X are fairly similar, while Microsoft appears to theoretically have the edge over Sony in terms of power.

But if the new PS5 update becomes a reality, it could give it a major boost over the Xbox in terms of user experience.
