A savvy mum has managed to give her bathroom a whole new look for just $60.

While it may just be a paint job, Rikki James, 54, of the NSW south coast, said it’s breathed new life into what was once a “horrid” and “disgusting” looking space.

The mother-of-three said she became fed up with the mismatched yellow and off-white tiles in her bathroom, that she made it her mission to find the most affordable DIY solution.

She used two tins of Aldi’s $20 tile paint, a Special Buys item costing a total of $40, and one tin of Cabot’s water based satin clear interior varnish ($19.10) from Bunnings to transform the space.

“It’s also a small room and I wanted to make it bigger, and so opted for an all-white look,” Ms James told news.com.au.

To prove just how durable the Aldi paint was, she shared before and after snaps in a popular hacks and tips Facebook page, six months apart.

“I kept half a tin of the paint in case I needed to go over it, but it hasn’t chipped or fallen apart for months,” Ms James said.

“I firstly washed down the tiles as normal, using sugar soap, then applied the paint straight away. I didn’t use any undercoat,” she said.

After applying three coats of the paint, she then applied Cabot’s clear water base over the top, two days later.

“I used that specific product as it prevents it from going yellow.”

While she’s not a fan of the brown floor tiles, Ms James said she is renting the property and doesn’t want to spend the extra cash on added repairs.

Since sharing her bathroom makeover on Facebook, her post has been inundated comments and hundreds of ‘likes’ from fellow DIY fans branding her new bathroom “amazing”.

“That looks amazing, inspired!” one woman wrote.

“Great idea … while saving the cash for a full renovation … I’m fed up with the peach colour and flowers … yuck! Thanks for this tip,” another user added.

“Awesome job! I’m inspired! Mine are cream and a row of burgundy. Might need to do a little painting,” a third commented. while others shared their own makeover successes.

“We did ours 10 years ago, it still looks great,” one woman said, alongside a snap of her bathroom tiles.

Ms James said to help keep her tiles fresh and free from mould, she uses a $2 Supreme shower, bath and tile spray from The Reject Shop.

“I will just spray it with shower cleaner and during the next shower I either rinse it off or use a sponge and wipe all the walls down. If I see any signs of mould I spray that with shower cleaner and it’s gone the next day.”
