Diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma before his first season as head coach of the Washington Football Team, Ron Rivera finished his cancer treatments and went on to lead his team to an NFC East title.Â
The division rivals will be on the schedule again in 2021, but cancer is an opponent Rivera hopefully won’t have to deal with any longer. The 59-year-old announced Thursday he is cancer-free.Â
“Thank you everyone for your prayers, letters, texts & notes of encouragement & support,” Rivera wrote on Twitter while posing with dogs Sierra and Tahoe and holding a sign that read, “We Kicked Cancer’s Ass.”Â
“It truly made a difference in my treatment & recovery!#RiveraStrong”
During the season, Rivera’s treatments included chemotherapy every two weeks and proton therapy five days a week. His final treatment came on Oct. 26.Â
Rivera’s wife, Stephanie, and daughter, Courtney, also shared social media posts noting that Rivera was officially cancer-free after a checkup.Â
