Sainsbury’s director says most staff and customers want to keep Covid protection and masks as cases rise
Sainsbury’s director Clodagh Moriarty has said most of its staff and customers want to keep Covid protection measures in place as cases rise and for ‘everyone to wear face masks, if they can’.Â
The supermarket’s retail director said she was among those who ‘don’t particularly like wearing a mask’ and recognised encouraging people to do so ‘won’t be welcomed by some’.Â
However, she added: ‘Yes, masks might be annoying, but we think they are a small price to pay for keeping our communities safe as we all navigate what will hopefully be the final stages of the pandemic.Â
Concern: Most of Sainsbury’s staff and customers want to keep Covid protection measures in place as cases rise
‘We believe it’s the right thing to do. Our colleagues have gone to extraordinary lengths to continue feeding the nation during the toughest days of the pandemic. They are our heroes.Â
‘We owe it to them to make sure they feel safe at work.’Â She said the company had been listening to staff about how to make them feel safe from the virus and to protect them ‘from the minority of customers who sadly believe that abuse and violence are an acceptable way to respond to pandemic safety measures’.Â
The company said on Thursday that it would continue to encourage shoppers and staff to wear masks if they could, and it would keep perspex screens at checkouts, deep clean stores every night and sanitise trolleys and baskets between use. She added: ‘We don’t want any doubt about our position.’Â
The confusion over the lifting of restrictions tomorrow – which has been billed as ‘Freedom Day’ – and the rise in cases has prompted many companies to issue guidance on their own safety measures.Â
Moriarty made her statement after Sainsbury’s became the first grocer to clarify its position on mask wearing.  Â
Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose will also continue to ask customers to wear masks despite the lifting of nearly all lockdown restrictions in England from tomorrow.Â
The Prime Minister confirmed the decision last week but warned ‘this pandemic is not over’.Â
The Government also extended its advice for working from home and many office workers are now not expected to return until the autumn.
