Space Jam: A New Legacy slam dunks box office with $31.7M and benches Black Widow

Space Jam: A New Legacy starring LeBron James and Looney Tunes characters slam dunked the North American box office with $31.7M during its opening weekend in 3,956 theaters.

Overseas, Malcolm D. Lee’s $150M-budget live-action/animated sports sequel amassed an additional $23M from 54 territories – according to THR.

Space Jam currently holds a dismal 31% critic approval rating (out of 132 reviews), but audiences scored it 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the fast-spreading coronavirus Delta variant, Space Jam managed to beat out Black Widow, which took in $26.3M at 4,275 domestic theaters.

Overseas, Cate Shortland’s critically-acclaimed $200M-budget movie starring Scarlett Johansson earned another $29.9M.

Third place at the box office went to Adam Robitel’s PG-13 horror sequel Escape Room: Champion of Tournaments starring Pose’s Indya Moore, which earned $8.8M.

Landing in fourth place with $7.6M was Justin Lin’s star-studded action flick F9, which has earned a total $591.3M at the global box office.

The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Forever Purge, and A Quiet Place Part II took the fifth, sixth, and seventh places at the box office.

Morgan Neville’s documentary Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain debuted with $1.9M and Michael Sarnoski’s directorial debut Pig starring Nicolas Cage took in $1M.
