Canada has unveiled the official uniform its athletes will wear at the Closing Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics – and fans are less than impressed.

On Thursday, Team Canada released new images of the unusual outfit, which consists of tight white jeans and a 1980s-style blue denim jacket emblazoned with graffiti.

Designed by Hudson Bay and Levi’s, the uniform is billed as a ‘twist on the iconic Canadian tuxedo’, with the graffiti on the denim jacket intended as a tribute to Tokyo’s ‘street art scene’.

‘The graffiti graphic and unexpected patch placements capture a youthful and celebratory feel,’ Hudson Bay proclaimed in a press release, stating that their jean jacket was ‘forever cool’ and the ‘must-have piece of the collection’.

But many fervently disagreed, and quickly took to Twitter to troll Team Canada over the Closing Ceremony look.

‘Cancel the Olympics!’ one user declared, poking fun at the outfits.

‘Did Canada forget they had to submit something and get these made at a mall kiosk?’ another asked.

‘A mall in the 1980s!’ a third user chimed in.

Indeed many Twitter users proclaimed that the jean jacket looked like it came from that much-maligned decade of fashion.

‘Oh dear, the model is so annoyed that her mom shopped at the preteen department at Sears in 1987,’ one quipped.

‘Canada will be dressing like it’s 1988!’ another joked.

One social media user contrasted Canada’s Closing Ceremony uniform with the one unveiled by Team USA designed by Ralph Lauren.

‘The U.S. vs Canada Olympic outfits look like the plot of a bad 80s camp film where the freaks/geeks have to overcome the preppies,’ they wrote.

Meanwhile, several claimed the uniform reminded them of one worn by Robin Sparkles – a fictional 1980s Canadian popstar from the TV series How I Met Your Mother.

Meanwhile, others proclaimed that the denim outfit looked like it could also be more at home in the 1990s.

One user shared a photo of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake dressed in double-denim ensembles back in the 1990s.

Another joked that the uniform could have been inspired by the 90s Irish girl band B*Witched, who were famous for wearing jean jackets on stage.

However, there were others who were in favor of the casual street-style look that Team Canada has opted for.

‘I’m fine with the Canadian jean jackets for the Olympics Closing Ceremony,’ one wrote. ‘Think they are amusing, and ironic about the pretentious overweighting of these things. And these will be fit young people wearing them. They can carry it easily’.

Meanwhile, some were left less-than-impressed with Team USA’s uniforms, designed by Ralph Lauren.

Some slammed them as too preppy and snooty, with a detractor stating: ‘Big “that dorm is named after my grandfather” energy’.

‘Can someone turn down all that Whiteness?’ another asked.

It was unclear whether they were referring to the shade of the uniform or the skin tone which the preppy style connotes.

Neither Team Canada nor Team USA have replied to the social media criticism.
