It’s an Australian institution as sacred as a Bunnings sausage sizzle or Vegemite on toast.

But one American expat has gone viral on TikTok for revealing she was less than impressed by our Kmart – prompting a very mixed reaction from Aussies.

In April, Hannah Shuman posted a video about her trip to Australian Target, comparing it with the American version.

But to her shock many Australians resonded by stating they “f***ing hate Target”, prompting her to visit Kmart and document the trip in a TikTok posted Wednesday.

“Now I’m going to go where everyone told me to go, which is Kmart,” she said in the video, also explaining that American Kmart – which is owned by a different company to the Aussie version – is a “cheap sh*t version of Walmart”.

“Growing up in the United States, Kmart was sh*t, it was awful, it all went out of business. So it’s basically the opposite of what’s happened here,” Ms Shuman said.

She said Aussie Kmart had a lot of positives going for it, from its “wide selection” of products as they “literally have everything”.

But Ms Shuman said there were some things she didn’t like about Kmart.

“Overall I feel like Kmart is almost always lacking in stock. I feel like I see a lot of bare shelves.

“Plus with clothing I can never ever ever find my size which is a size six, and they literally never have anything in a size six.”

Ms Shuman video ended her video by offering up a controversial opinion.

“But overall – I know I’m going to get grilled for saying this – I still like Target better than Kmart.”

Her video, which has been viewed more than 40,000 times, had Aussies firmly split over her take on Kmart.

One person joked she should have her “visa revoked”, while another commented: “You’re wrong, Kmart is better.”

“Kmart is my babe. Target is just way too expensive and doesn’t fit the vibe check,” another said.

Others pointed out that the lack of stock was just a temporary problem due to coronavirus and that a size six was hard to get in a lot of retailers.

“Heaps of stores in Australia have stopped selling size six. The only places I go is Supre and then everywhere else is like boutique places,” one person explained.

“Stock is because of Covid. Before Covid it wasn’t a problem,” another said.

But some Aussies actually agreed with Ms Shuman, saying they preferred Target’s range of products despite it usually being more expensive.

“Kmart is overrated anyway. I don’t understand how people can love shopping there,” one wrote.

“I prefer Target – it’s better quality,” another commented.
