Inmates are throwing things from the third floor of St Louis city jail, after smashing the windows, according to reports.

The prisoners, at the City Justice Center, have broken the window panes and reportedly started a fire.

Crowds have gathered outside, believed to be made up of demonstrators and families and can be heard cheering and shouting ‘more court dates’.

At least a dozen prisoners can be seen standing by the broken windows.

KSK News reports that officers were told 30 to 40 inmates have armed themselves as part of the riots.

A spokesperson from the center has said: “We are aware of the disturbance on the third floor of the CJC and that authorities are responding accordingly.”

The fire brigade was also called to the incident, the inmates extinguished the flames but have reportedly set them alight again as officers attempt to break the rioters up inside.

This is not the first time a riot has broken out, earlier in February, prisoners broke out fourth-floor windows and tossed things outside.

Mattresses, chairs and a stationary bike were lobbed out the window in the disturbance.

They were concerned over the Covid pandemic and restrictions on visits and stalled court proceedings.
