This is the heartbreaking moment a pet poodle was mauled to death by a pack of wolves in a Chinese zoo.
Video taken by terrified tourists on April 5 captures the poor dog falling from a viewing platform into the wolf enclosure before a pack of seven wolves fight to get their share of the unexpected meal.
Nearby tourists can be heard screaming while watching the animals sink their teeth into the tiny canine.
The wolves chomp into the dog until one of them runs away with it.
Ms Ma, who saw the incident unfold while she was visiting the scenic spot of Wild Wolf Valley in the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang, told local media what happened just before the accident.
She said: “The pet owner is a little girl. She wanted to show the wolves to the dog and picked up the tiny pooch over the viewing platform.”
The platform was about two to three metres high from the wolf den, Ms Ma recalled.
She continued: “I guess the dog freaked out when it saw the wolves and tried to jump off the girl’s hand. The girl couldn’t hold it and it fell inside the enclosure.
“I thought the wolves were hunting a chicken but then I realised it was the dog.
“It didn’t have a chance to bark and it died shortly.”
She also mentioned that the girl did not look sad over her pet’s death and that she left without trying to ask for the staff’s help.
A staff member told local media that the dog was killed in the attack but did not reveal whether the body was recovered or eaten before it could be removed.
