Meghan Markle was teased for publishing a children’s book with “sweet” stories, a royal expert said as she shared thoughts on the release of the new book.
The Duchess of Sussex’s picture book The Bench, published by Random House Children’s Books, is set to be on sale next month on June 8.
Illustrated by award-winning artist Christian Robinson, the cover of the book features an empty bench under a tree where a bird stands on the branch and another flying away.
Pod Save the Queen presenters Ann Gripper and Russell Myers shared their thoughts on the Duchess’s debut picture book.

Ann admitted she hasn’t read the book but based on the book cover and the preview of what’s inside, she said: “I thought, you know, children’s book, there’s a lot of them out there. Some are great, some are not so great.
“People have different kinds of things they like – some like more action and adventure, or shapes and fun, rather this is sort of, I’m guessing, slightly sickly sweet variety this is probably more likely to be.
“But it’s maybe because I am a cynical, old hag.”

Daily Mirror royal editor Russell also mentioned the comments from other royal watchers that the book’s story contradicts the relationship between Meghan and her father.
“Drawing from her experience of her, Harry being the force is a very nice illustration of Harry, or the central character wearing the army fatigues and the young little boy, delighted that he sees his father again,” Russell suggested.

Meghan mentioned in a press release: “The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born. That poem became this story.
“Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life.
“This representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens.”
