A four-year-old child was shot dead and a sibling is fighting for their life after a tragic shooting inside a Subway parking lot.

The two siblings were found inside a car outside the restaurant in Florida, US.

There are reports that the children were brothers but this has not been confirmed yet by police.

Sheriff Steve Whidden told ABC news cops received a call at 3pm (8pm GMT) from Clewiston Police Department for assistance after a child was found shot near Berner Road in Florida.

The four-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and the five-year-old was airlifted to a trauma centre fighting for their life.

Police are not ruling out accidental or homicide

Police investigating the tragic incident believe the shooting may have taken place inside the parking lot of the compound.

Cops are treating it as a homicide but are not ruling out the possibility it was accidental.
