UK weather: Brits issued flood warnings over fears it could rain every day until June

Brits warned to expect floods as “heavy and persistent” rain is forecast for the next 10 days – but it could continue throughout the rest of May.

The Met Office has warned that the UK will be blighted by torrential rain along with chilly temperatures.

Parts of the South West have already been issued with Yellow rain warnings after today’s weather conditions caused havoc on the roads.

There are also eight warnings issued to areas of Devon and Somerset as residents have been warned to “be prepared.”

However, rainfall has reportedly been the heaviest across the Midlands and Wales this afternoon but the southwest had the most persistent downpours, according to the Met Office.

Northern Ireland will expect thunder tonight but conditions are expected to get slightly drier overnight.

Temperatures across the country will barely make it past the mid-teens as the UK faces highs of between 15C and 16C in York and Peterborough.

Tomorrow (May 14) is executed to be brighter but “fairly cloudy” across the north and east of England.

Thunder and heavy showers are forecast for Wales, southern England and Northern Ireland.

The heavy rainfall will continue throughout the week and become more widespread, forecasters predict.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: “Essentially the set-up in weather that we’ve got at the moment is set to remain for the foreseeable future.”

He estimates that the UK has seen 53.6mm of rain up to May 11 – 77 per cent of the month’s average total.

Weather charts show up to 57mm of rain could have fallen by Sunday (May 16).

The Met Office has said damp conditions can be expected to last well into next week and perhaps beyond.
