A royal biographer has claimed that all three of The Queen’s closest life-long confidants have died, leaving the monarch with no one left to confide in.
Matthew Dennison – who has written about royals past and present in books and articles – claims says The Queen was closest to her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, her sister, the late Princess Margaret and husband Prince Philip – who passed away last month.
The biographer claims the trio of royals were closer to Her Majesty than “any of her children or friends” – but that her role as monarch prepared her for each of their losses.
The Queen Mother passed away in 2002, aged 101, Princess Margaret also passed away in 2002 aged 71, while Prince Philip was just weeks away from his 100th birthday when he died in April.
Matthew writes in his new book, simply titled The Queen: “In her long role as Monarch, the Queen has probably trusted fully just three people: her mother, her sister and her husband, a trio to whom she was closer than any of her children or friends.
“After the deaths of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret in 2002, Philip was the sole remaining member of that group.
“With his loss, the Monarch is arguably more alone than at any time in her long life.”
However, the royal experts add that he believes: “decades of building her personal strength and resilience” through the “isolation of the role of Monarch” has prepared her for her “solitary role”.
The Queen showed incredible resolve following the death of her husband last month, drawing awe and admiration when she sat alone at his funeral as Covid regulations limited the number of people allowed to attend his funeral.
While she was back to work just weeks after the death of the Duke of Edinburgh – who passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 9.
Paying tribute to his father following his death, Prince Charles said over the last 70 years his father had “given the most remarkable, devoted service to the Queen, to my family and to the country, but also to the whole of the Commonwealth”.
He referred to the late Duke as “dear papa†and described him as a “very special person who… above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him”.
While Prince Philip’s last message to Prince Charles was reportedly to look after The Queen in his absence, and to take the lead in terms of royal events in the years to come.
