A Royal Bengal tigress has mauled a zoo attendant to death after three gates leading to her cage were left open, say Indian reports.
Poulash Karmakar, 35, was killed after entering eight-year-old Chippi’s enclosure to clean her water pond on Tuesday.
Police have launched a negligence investigation following the big cat attack in the north east Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
Zoo curator Raya Flago told news agency PTI: “The incident happened at around 2.30pm on Tuesday.
“I was informed of the incident by one of our animal attendants. When I reached the zoo along with a doctor and other staff, Poulash Karmakar was already dead.
“He was found bleeding from the face.”

He said the tragedy was due to three gates that led to the cage from the area where the attendant was working being left open.
The eight-year-old tigress named Chippi has been staying in the zoo since 2013.
Officials said Mr Karmakar was attacked while on duty as an attendant in Itanagar city’s biological park.
Mr Karmakar lived in the town of Dhekiajuli in the neighbouring state of Assam.

Arunachal Pradesh’s environment and forest minister Mama Natung confirmed the incident on Twitter.
He wrote: “Visited the zoo to take stock. Govt will duly compensate for the irreparable loss. Prayers for the departed soul.”
A police investigation has been launched in the case and forensic teams were examining the body of the deceased, PTI reported.
Itanagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kamdam Sikom said: “Police did not see anything suspicious and it seems to be a case of negligence as per preliminary investigation.â€

He added that the body would be handed over to family members on Wednesday following forensic examinations.
Earlier this month the Daily Star reported that families and homeowners were left in a panic when they looked outside to see a Bengal tiger prowling their neighbourhood.
The big cat was seen stalking the streets after escaping a local private zoo.

The striped cat was walking up and down the street and across people’s front lawns.
In one video on Twitter, a man was yelling to someone to “get the f**k back inside”.
In another clip, a concerned resident recorded the moment the tiger kept running up towards the armed man – who was later identified as a law enforcement official.
He happened to be nearby when neighbours spotted the four-legged creature.

The woman who recorded the moment says in a scared voice: “Straight up, stand down right now.
“All these cars are just waiting because there is a friggin Bengal tiger in this yard and this dude needs to be careful, holy cow.
“Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh, he’s gonna shoot it.”
