A jealous mum who attacked a woman in a fit of jealous rage with a broken vodka bottle, causing her to lose an eye, has been jailed.
Courtney Thompson attacked Jade Conway at a New Year’s Eve party after taking cocaine and drinking alcohol at the victim’s property.
Victim Jade Conway lost her left eye and has suffered permanent facial scarring from the attack.
The Manchester Crown Court heard that Ms Thompson, 24, had wrongly suspected Ms Conway was in a relationship with her partner Jordan Latham.
The court heard that the pair were in fact just ‘close friends’ who were like ‘brother and sister’.
Prosecutor Thomas Worsfold said that Ms Thompson and Mr Latham, who were in a ‘toxic’ on-off relationship for about three years, had began arguing and exchanged angry text messages on New Year’s Eve.
The court heard that at 7.20am on New Year’s Day, 2020, Thompson called 999 and claimed she had been assaulted by Mr Latham.
She then called 999 again a few moments later and was reportedly advised to not return to the party.
But half an hour later Thompson went into the living room of Ms Conway’s house and smashed a vodka bottle over Mr Latham’s head.
The court heard that when Ms Conway, who was sitting on the sofa at the time, attempted to split up the pair Thompson repeatedly stabbed her in the face with the broken neck of the bottle.
The homeowner suffered multiple stab wounds to her left eye, serious cuts to her face and other wounds on her head and hands.
Ms Thompson lost sight in her left eye, which had to be removed and replaced with a prosthetic and has suffered permanent scarring to her face.
Forensic experts later concluded from her wounds that she must have been stabbed four times with the broken bottle neck.
She reportedly still suffers excruciating pain from her injuries and has problems with depth perception. She says the attack has “totally destroyed me”.
In a victim statement read out in court Ms Conway said: “This has been a living hell.
“The pain and destruction caused have not only physically scarred me for the rest of my life but also mentally scarred me.
“She has totally destroyed me.
“I have been fitted with a false eye, but this will never replace my eye.
“I cannot face any more operations. I don’t sleep. I feel frightened because I cannot see what’s going on around me.
“My children have also suffered because I cannot take them to groups.
“I have had a breakdown and suicidal thoughts.
“This incident did not need to happen. I should not be suffering. I have done nothing to Courtney Thompson for this to happen. She is a dangerous person who should not be allowed to do this to anyone else.â€
Ms Thompson initally denied a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent against Ms Conway but admitted a charge of actual bodily harm against Mr Latham.
She changed her plea a week before trial.
Kate Cornell, Recorder, sentenced Thompson from Blackley to seven years and seven months in prison.
She called the attack “shocking and horrific”.
She added: “Nothing I do today will ever make up for Jade Conway losing her sight, however I hope this substantial sentence is punishment for your actions.â€
