A single mum who drives a 32-tonne tipper truck while wearing makeup says she “takes no s*** from builders”.
Glamorous Christina Demetriou says people don’t take her seriously when she tells them what she does for a living.
The 31-year-old, from Islington, north London, is “quite girly”, by her own admission, while handling the huge vehicle.
She told My London: “I wear makeup and get my nails done. At a construction site or in the club men get confused.
“They are like: ‘What is going on?'”
Christina spends her days driving trucks to construction sites around London.
She added: “I love this job. For me it’s something I’m passionate about. I can meet new people and am never in the same place, which is good, I don’t like staying still.
“I have a daughter so I don’t like to be away from here for too long. She’s 11 going on 21.”
Constructions is one of the most male-dominated industries in the UK with only 13% of the workforce made up by women.
Christina thinks this means she “gets treated differently”.
She said: “I don’t enjoy the constant stigma about women being truck drivers. You don’t always get treated the same way.
“Not all men of course but there are some that just see women as objects.
“We pull up to a site and someone says something too much, it can make you feel isolated and uncomfortable.
“I do meet other truck drivers. I try to advocate for women in construction.
“I’ve found to do what I do you have to be a certain type of lady – resilient but with a little bit of grit about you.
“Without that you won’t be able to survive.”
Christina added that she would encourage more women to join the industry.
She said: “I would definitely tell her to do it. Tell her to be confident and believe in herself.
“And not take sh*t from anyone. If you don’t have confidence you wont get anywhere, you need to tell yourself you can do it.”
