A young and glamorous fitness influencer has died after an operation went south in a backstreet clinic.
The 23-year-old bodybuilder was receiving surgery to combat constant sweating when she suffered a cardiac arrest after receiving anesthesia.
Odalis Santos Mena, from Mexico, died shortly afterward, with doctors attempting “everything medically possible” to save her life.
Reports following her death claim a negligent anesthesiologist had allegedly not been trained to administer the drugs.
A Coroner’s report states that Mena’s death was likely a result of the combination of anesthetic drugs and a steroid she had been taking.
It’s alleged the medical office offering the quick MiraDry procedure was unlicensed.
Mena had attended the SkinPiel clinic in Guadalajara in Mexico after the practice reportedly recruited her to promote it.
Employees attempted to perform CPR on the influencer but were unable to revive her, the New York Post writes.
Police launched an investigation and preliminary reports attributed her death to a negligent anesthesiologist, and The Sun reports the practice is unlicensed.
The clinic claimed Mena’s doctor “immediately proceeded to do everything medically possible”, in a statement to People.
It said they called an ambulance and brought in medical experts to determine if she had consumed any substances.
The clinic claimes Mena had creatine, clenbuterol, and oxandrolone in her system, which they say they were unaware of before the procedure.
“Upon delivering the signed form to the doctor, he asked [her] again about substance use, and [she] verbally reiterated that [she] had not,” the clinic alleged.
Before the op, the star – who has more than 147,000 Instagram followers, advertised the procedure on her account, telling fans that it was safe and effective.
The treatment has been used in more than 140,000 procedures globally and was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration, according to MiraDry.
It utilises heat energy to remove sweat glands which allegedly reduces perspiration by 82% and body odor by 89%.
Some patients claim they see less armpit hair growth after having the treatment.
Mena’s loved ones say they are devastated by her passing, with her boyfriend penning a heartbreaking tribute after her death.
Personal trainer Victor Gomez Carreno wrote: “Your actions in life, echo in eternity. I will take you with me forever short, it makes no sense to write here what I feel in my heart @odalis_sm, I love you.”
