UK weather: 32C heatwave from ‘Azores plume’ will end with thunderstorms and rain

A scorching heatwave is sweeping across the country bringing highs of 31 and 32C on Sunday.

The UK weather has taken a bright turn and offered a scorching summer heatwave just in time before the month is out.

The warmer skies have been climbing throughout the week with the hottest day of the year expected to take place today.

The previous record, of 28.8C in Heathrow, London, is predicted to be smashed by the melting mercury in the capital later on this afternoon.

According to the latest Met Office forecast, London is set to bask in temperatures of at least 31C at the hottest time of day.

Areas in the south east, East of England, and outskirts of the capital are also set to see 30C and low 30s for the weekend.

Most Brits will have the opportunity to soak up the sun with mid to high 20s expected across the country, including Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The bright blue skies are set to continue into next week, with a seven-day heatwave taking over the UK.

The good weather comes as Freedom Day is just around the corner on July 19, where social distancing measures will be scrapped for the most part.

There will be no limitations on how many friends or family you can meet outdoors and inside homes, and mask-wearing will no longer be a legal requirement.

However, the Government has advised that in cramped spaces for some aspects of social distancing to remain in place under guidance.

Pubs will no longer need to only provide table service and punters will be able to talk to pals as they order a pint at the bar.

Ministers have told the hospitality sector that it’s down to the venues themselves if they require Covid passports from guests.

When will this heatwave end?

How long is this heatwave going to last? Brits have been awaiting the hot weather for weeks, and it was only a matter of days ago when flash floods caused havoc in London.

After a washout May and odd days of sunshine in June, the heatwave proved that the British summer hadn’t disappeared this year, following 18 months of lockdowns and Covid rules.

According to the latest forecast, thunderstorms and rains will bring the heatwave to a crashing end.

The Met Office states there may be isolated heavy showers between Tuesday and Thursday and cooler weather at times along the east coast.

However, a band of thunderstorms will lash Brits in the south west between July 22 and the end of the month, before spreading erratically northeast across the UK over the weekend.

Northern areas will see cooler conditions and wind on the coast.

Temperatures are expected to ease back to normal towards the end of the month with several days of thunderstorms and rain possible throughout the final 10 days.
