A British expat has been found dead with one hand tied to the deck of a sunken sailing boat, according to reports.
The 70-year-old’s body was found as his boat sailed on the Greek island of Crete, with his dog clinging on to the wreckage.
The sailing boat was mysteriously found to have been sunken despite the clear weather.
An investigation has begun into the incident and the man’s body has been recovered from the water, according to Zarpa News.
Emergency services attended the scene including the Greek Coast Guard and the Souda Port Authority, after a fisherman discovered the sunken vessel.
However, the man had already dead when found and was taken to Chania Hospital for an autopsy.
Local news outlets reported the man had been living on the boat for the last ten years with his dog.
His wife had died a decade ago.
It has also been revealed he was the victim of a robbery in which he was found with his feet tied up by rope, two years ago, reports The Sun.
The man’s dog was found alive by the fisherman, and has been taken to a local welfare society.
The Animal Protection society posted on social media: “The animal was whining and was desperately trying to hold on to the wreckage of the sailboat to avoid drowning.
“Unfortunately, the guardian of the dog, who is an English citizen, was found dead.
“Please anyone who can foster the dog temporarily, so that the police can look for the family of his unfortunate guardian,” reports The Sun.
The man is found to be a British citizen, though his identity remains unknown.
According to locals he was a “very calm man.”
