Meghan Markle could reveal all about her rift with Kate Middleton during her tell-all chat with Oprah Winfrey, royal aides fear.
They are said to be worried about the potential damage to the monarchy if she speaks openly about her relationship with the Duchess of Cambridge.
Aides are also said to be concerned that the bombshell interview could make tensions between Prince Harry and Prince William worse.
Hundreds of millions of TV viewers in 68 countries are set to watch the interview, which will be broadcast in the US on Sunday night.
There have been claims Meghan and Kate, 39, felt under pressure to get along in public because everyone expected them to become instant friends as sisters-in-law.
But the Duchess of Sussex, 39, is said to have had a run-in with Kate over a wedding dress fitting, according to the Sun.
A source told the newspaper: “If she has chosen to speak candidly about her time with Kate then the damage that could be done to the monarchy is vast.
“She has the power to lay bare just how bad things really were between her, Harry, William and Kate.â€
The insider described it as being Meghan’s “nuclear optionâ€.
She is also due to be asked by the chat show host about the breakdown of her relationship with her dad Thomas Markle.
The interview will be shown on ITV on Monday night.
Historian Dominic Green has claimed the CBS primetime special could “trash Britain’s image†in the eyes of America.
The chat comes as Prince Philip, 99, remains in hospital after having heart surgery and battling an infection, having been admitted last month after feeling “unwellâ€.
He was transferred from King Edward VII’s Hospital to St Bartholomew’s Hospital for heart treatment, before switching back.
Prince Harry and Meghan confirmed the special will go ahead despite calls for it to be delayed because of the Duke of Edinburgh’s hospital stay.
The interview will be broadcast days after reports Meghan faced a bullying complaint from her time in Kensington Palace, which she denies.
