Meghan Markle has given Oprah Winfrey “an honest answer” about why son Archie has not been made a prince.
Archie, who was born in 2019, carries only the royal family’s surname Mountbatten-Windsor, as opposed to an HRH title.
It was widely reported at the time of his birth that Prince Harry and Meghan were keen on the move so their eldest son could lead a ‘normal’ life.
Archie is currently seventh in line to the throne, following his father Harry in sixth place.
Both however will shift down the pecking order further when Prince William and Kate’s children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have kids of their own.
In Harry and Meghan’s controversial interview, US TV host, Oprah asks: “How did they explain to you that your son, the great-grandson of the Queen, wasn’t going to be a prince.
“You certainly must have had some conversations with Harry about it and have your own suspicions as to why they didn’t want to make Archie a prince. Why do you think that is?”
To which Meghan replies: “I can give you an honest answer.” She added that “they” didn’t want their then-unborn child to be granted a Prince or Princess title, as it would differ from the royal protocol.
The Queen made a ruling in 2012 which clearly explains the situation.
It was decided that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children would have HRH titles, because William is the eldest son of the heir to the throne and will one day be King.
As Harry is Prince Charles’s younger son, his children do not qualify.
Princess Anne’s children do not have titles and have said on several occasions that they are grateful for this as it has given them more freedom.
Also in the interview, Meghan claims there were “concerns” about the colour of baby Archie’s skin.
The soon-to-be mum of two said that while she was pregnant with Archie, there had been “several conversations” within the Palace about “how dark” their baby would have been.
The Duchess, 39, said conversations also consisted of Archie not “being given security or a title”
It had been speculated that Harry and Meghan made the decision to turn down a curtesy title from The Queen but Meghan has now said that this was not the case.
