A bargain-hunter spent just 80p on a house in Italy after agreeing to a catch that was “too good to be true”.

Danny McCubbin, 56, agreed to buy the €1 home in Sicily on the condition that he would renovate the property within three years of purchase.

Homes in Mussomeli are being flogged off at bargain prices under a “Case 1 Euro” campaign launched to encourage foreigners there.

It is hoped the move will inject much needed cash into the area.

And happy to take up the offer was Danny, who decided to take what he described as a “leap of faith”.

Danny McCubbin decided to take a “leap of faith”

He told LadBible: “I took a leap of faith last year and left London in December, just in time to apply for my Italian residency before the end of the Brexit transition period.

“I know Italy has its challenges as well but there is a great sense of community here, especially in Sicily where people have struggled for such a long time.

“I don’t know anyone in this town and my Italian is not great so it was a huge risk to leave friends in London, but I knew in my heart that this was the right move for me.”

Danny has decided to live permanently in Italy

He added: “Everyone is very welcoming of foreigners who have bought €1 houses as they know that we are helping to breathe life back into this town.”

He said he initially wanted to use it as a second home but decided he wanted to move permanently.

Danny is in the process of renovating the house, and also wants to set up a community kitchen project.

The area is welcoming people who want to buy homes at a bargain rate

So far, he has raised £22,000 for his Crowdfunder campaign.

Long-term, he then wants to donate the house back to the town.

He also urged anyone considering doing the same to “go for it”.
