Anamosa State Penitentiary: Inmate ‘kills nurse and prison officer’ in horror attack

A nurse and a prison officer have been killed after an inmate went on a bloody rampage.

The prisoner attacked “multiple” inmates and staff members during the bloodbath inside the infirmary at Anamosa State Penitentiary in Iowa, US.

Officials said a nurse and a correctional officer died from their injuries after the assault at 10.15am on Tuesday.

Extra security staff arrived at the prison’s hospital and restrained the inmate.

Staff members desperately tried to administer first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack.

The Iowa Department of Corrections said “multiple staff members” were assaulted.

In a statement, it said: “A department nurse and a correctional officer have died as a result of their injuries.

“At this tie, the department is collecting and confirming details of the assault.

“What the department can confirm is that an inmate attacked multiple staff members and inmates in the prison’s infirmary.

“As a result of their injuries, a correctional nurse and correctional officer have died.”

The department continued: “Additional security staff arrived and restrained the inmate.

“Staff began attempting life-saving first aid on the injured until paramedics arrived.”

Names are being withheld until the families have been notified and pending the investigation, it added.

The Iowa Department of Corrections and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are leading the joint investigation.

According to its website, the jail is a maximum and medium-security prison.

The site has about 950 inmates and 321 staff members.

The prison’s annual report for 2019 stated about 70% of inmates were convicted of violent crimes.

And the average sentence is more than 25 years, the Des Moines Register reported.
