A weird creaking noise interrupted a White House press briefing – sparking conspiracy theories that the old building was inhabited by “ghosts”.
Press Secretary Jen Psaki was talking about US President Biden’s response to the coronavirus pandemic when a loud and ominous drowned out her words on Tuesday (April 27).
In the clip, she laughs out loud as she tries to style out the interruption.
She then glances towards the direction of the mysterious and back at reporters, telling them: “Have no fear, the ceiling is not falling.”
Psaki was talking about new US national guidelines that would allow people who had received a Covid vaccination not to have to wear face masks outdoors.
A reporter suggested it was the ghost of former President Abraham Lincoln who served from 1861 until his assassination in 1865.
The creaking noise then comes back later in the press briefing, leaving Psaki flustered.
She joked: “OK, maybe it’s former President Lincoln’s ghost, I’m going to go with that.”
The weird noise was also picked up by conspiracy theorists who shared the footage on Twitter and debated if it really could be something paranormal in the 200-year-old building.
One person tweeted: “Jen Psaki press briefing interrupted by curious creaking sounds…. President Lincoln’s ghost?”
“It never happened before. Believe it or not, they will come and haunt you,” another person said.
“An odd noise interrupted the #WhiteHouse press briefing today. What was it?!?” someone else asked.
A fifth viewer noted: “Although, wouldn’t Lincoln’s ghost be at Ford’s Theatre? Or even back in Illinois?”
It turns out, the “spooky” occurrence was no more than a squeaking robotic arm from a camera attached to the ceiling but rumours of ghosts in the building are long-standing.
Michelle Obama told school children visiting the White House in 2009 that she and former President Barack Obama sometimes heard strange noises in the hallway at night.
Jenna Bush Hager, former President George W. Bush’s daughter, claimed she once inexplicably heard 1920s piano music coming from a fireplace.
