Arizona shootings: One dead and 13 wounded as gunman ‘randomly’ shoots from car

One person has died and 13 others have been injured after a 90-minute shooting spree caused terror in a town.

At least four of the victims were shot and others were injured either in shrapnel or resulting car accidents, Brandon Sheffert, Peoria Sergeant said.

The 13 wounded victims are expected to survive and suffer non life-threatening injuries.

Authorities were called to reports of an active shooter in the West Valley, around 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, Arizona, at around 12.30pm local time (8pm GMT).

The shooting spree saw eight separate crime scenes within approximately an hour and a half, Surprise and Peoria police said.

The motive behind the shootings is not yet known.

Police said one person was found shot dead in their car on the side of the 101 Freeway, NYPost writes.

Sheffert said: “We don’t know the nexus, we don’t know what the motive was, we don’t have an idea of what this person was thinking when he went out and did this.

“Obviously we want to figure this out because there’s a lot of scared people and people this affected.”

Reporter David Caltabiano states officers told press they believe the suspect was ‘shooting at random’.

“We have two people confirmed shot in random acts,” Surprise Police Sgt. Greg Welch told CNN.

Nine patients were transported to various West Valley medical centers, hospital operator Banner Health said in a statement.

The suspect, an adult male, was taken into custody by Surprise police officers following a traffic stop, NBC news reports.

Aerial shots of one of the scenes shows a white SUV with its doors open, with KTVK reporting it as the suspect’s vehicle.

The area, including an intersection near Bell Road and North 115th Avenue, was reportedly locked down, locals say.

The FBI are also investigating the incident.

Cops reported the alleged shooter is an adult male who will soon face a “litany of charges”, and added most, if not all unidentified victims, were in cars.
