A “lost” cat has been living under her family’s nose for five years after suddenly disappearing.

Catherine Cullen, 27, did not know whether beloved family pet Scrumpy was alive or dead after he vanished in 2016 in Brough, near Hull.

But she has now discovered the animal was “happy and healthy” living just 200 yards away from their home, Hull Live reports.

Catherine said: “As most of my friends know, we lost our beautiful Scrumpy in 2016, and we didn’t know if he was alive or what had happened.

“I have been putting search posts out regularly ever since but never expecting to find him or find anything but I figured it was worth a try.

“Today I shared it again as usual, and unbelievably a lovely lady who is very local has come forward and said that she has had him since 2016, he is happy and healthy and very loved.”

Catherine said she would never take Scrumpy back from his new owners given he is a “big part of their family now”.

She added: “We are all besides ourselves with happiness knowing that our boy is safe.

“What a good day and what good news. It is so good to know that he has just spent the years that we’ve been worrying being loved without a care in the world.

“It seems like he wants for nothing just like when he was with us.

“I can’t actually believe it. He will be staying with his current family as he chose them. Thank you to everyone that has shared my post through the years.

“Happy, happy, happy! He obviously just fell in love with other humans and adopted them. What a happy ending.

“I bought him and his sister for my mother and brother for their birthdays.”
