A blind woman collapsed in the street after her doting guide dog was attacked by two American bulldogs.

Kathy Worthington had visited Tesco and was walking home when her black Labrador was mauled.

The two large other dogs pounced on her five-year-old Kimba and repeatedly savaged him in an incident that lasted for a few minutes.

Many passers-by in Dovecot, Liverpool, rushed to help and one man used a pole to try and fend off the animals, writes Liverpool Echo.

Kathy’s partner had returned to the shop to make another purchase but once he came out he struggled to break the bulldogs’ grip on the guide dog.

Witnesses to the ordeal claim they had no collars on and were not attached to leads, with no owner seen nearby.

However, the owner has since come forward following the incident being circulated on social media.

Officers are now investigating the attack and have taken a statement from Kathy, 48.

The mum-of-four said: “I couldn’t really see what was going because I’m registered blind, but I first heard my partner shout, ‘Kathy, watch the dog’.

“I collapsed in shock, it was horrendous.

“I could just hear my dog yelping, and people saying, ‘they are going to kill him!’

“It was so horrific.

Kimba was rushed to the vets and received an injection for the pain and wounds. Puncture marks near his neck and side were cleaned.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: ” Following reports on social media, the owner of the American Bulldogs came forward and is supporting the police investigation.

Detective Inspector Jennie Beck said: “This has caused a great deal of distress to the owner of the injured Labrador, who is registered blind and relies heavily on the assistance of her dog.

“I would like to remind all dog owners to take extra care and apply appropriate security measures to protect both dogs and their owners. Incidents like these are unacceptable and can cause a long-term harm, or worse.

“Please, keep an eye on your dogs at all times and keep them on a lead while out in public.”
