A British backpacker who was saved from the jaws of a crocodile by her twin sister described thinking she was going to die as she was dragged underwater in a death roll.

Melissa Laurie and her sister Georgia were visiting a lagoon in Puerto Escondido, Mexico when the attack happened.

The pair had been taken to a part of the Manialtepec Lagoon where crocodiles were nesting by an unlicensed tourist guide on June 6.

When a 10-foot crocodile grabbed Melissa and pulled her into a death roll, her sister raced into the water to pull her out.

28-year-old Melissa has said she “knew she was in trouble” when she looked into the croc’s eyes and desperately tried to swim away.

In an interview with The Sun, Melissa said she believed her arm had been torn off as she was dragged down by the 80kg crocodile into the lagoon waters.

Melissa has been left with an eight-inch scar on her abdomen, following surgery in the aftermath of the attack.

She said: “I remember screaming underwater and at that moment my mind was racing because I thought I was going to die. I thought I was never going to see my family or my sister again.”

Once Georgia was on shore, she described hysterically called out for her sister before diving back in to pull her sister out and fight off the crocodile as it attempted to drag her away three times.

Georgia said: “I started bashing it and bashing it with both fists – just thumping it. It felt rock hard, like punching a wall.

“It grabbed you then tried to death roll you, and that’s when it bit me. It was really going for it – it would grab you and then bite you again.”

The crocodile eventually released Melissa, allowing Georgia to haul her onto a boat.

Melissa had suffered six puncture wounds across her abdomen, stomach, intestines, and bowel.

She was taken off the boat to an ambulance, and she and Georgia – who had lacerations up her wrist – made it to the hospital in Puerto Escondido, where Melissa was in the triage room for an hour before undergoing surgery.

Doctors told Georgia her sister had an open fracture in her arm, internal injuries to the abdomen, and water in her lungs, which could lead to infection and pneumonia.

Melissa, who also developed sepsis from her wounds, was put in a medically induced coma, which she awoke from four days later.
