People must “stay indoors†despite this weekend’s balmy 17C temperatures to avoid a hay fever “pollen bombâ€, experts are warning.
They say it’s the best way to avoid itchy eyes and constant sneezing despite millions desperate to step out in warm weather after months inside.
Oh, and if you do go outside you may have to shower as soon as you’re back behind closed doors.
They also urge sufferers to stuff their noses with Vaseline to keep out pollen, dust their homes top to bottom and constantly change clothes.
“Staying inside when the pollen count is high will help to avoid irritation,†said Specsavers chief audiologist Gordon Harrison.
“And showering and changing your clothes when you get home will help to remove pollen from skin and hair.â€
He said allergic reactions can even affect the lining of the middle ear via the Eustachian tube, which links the middle ear to the nose and throat.
“If this becomes blocked it can lead to a build-up in pressure, which can cause discomfort, popping in the ears, earache and impair your ability to hear.
“To avoid irritation, try putting a balm like Vaseline around the nose to trap pollen, and vacuum and dust your home regularly.â€
Specsavers clinical services director Giles Edmonds warned that as well as sneezing and a blocked or runny nose, hay fever can also cause red, itchy or watery eyes.
He said: “While it can be tempting to rub your eyes to ease discomfort, it’s important to refrain.
“Try not to touch your face and ensure you maintain good hand hygiene, particularly during the pandemic.â€
