The Kansas City Chiefs have confirmed in a statement that assistant linebackers coach Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, was involved in a multiple-vehicle crash Thursday night in Kansas City.
According to Kansas City’s 41 Action News and The Kansas City Star, two young children were injured in the collision — a 4-year-old and 5-year-old. The reports said both were hospitalized, with the 5-year-old suffering life-threatening injuries.
The Chiefs’ statement read, “The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid. We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.â€
The Chiefs are scheduled to arrive in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday for Sunday’s Super Bowl 55 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reid isn’t expected to make the trip, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not made an announcement on that decision.
Reid, 35, has worked on the Chiefs’ coaching staff since 2013.
The three-vehicle crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday south of the Chiefs’ practice facility, according to 41 Action News, where Reid’s vehicle struck a stranded vehicle. The driver and two children were in the vehicle at the time.
