Cricket legend Sir Ian Botham’s granddaughter, 20, crowned new Miss Yorkshire

The granddaughter of cricketing legend Lord Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham has shown her own competitive streak after being crowned Miss Yorkshire.

Imani-Jayne from Richmond, North Yorkshire, is the daughter of the peer’s son Liam who played rugby league, union and cricket.

The Nottingham University student’s brother James is a Welsh rugby union flanker who plays for Cardiff Blues.

However, the 20-year-old revealed her family proudly watched her unveiled as the winner, according to The Sun.

She said her friends “screamed the place down” after she won before adding: “I was so nervous. We will have a celebration in the house.

“My family are really proud of me – they were all watching. I come from a very competitive family. I wouldn’t be here without them.”

She will now compete for the Miss England title won last year by Bhasha Mukherjee, with the triumphant lady going forward to compete for the 70th Miss World title.

Imani-Jayne’s not the only member of the family noted for an impressive physique – as grandfather Beefy earned his nickname for his imposing build – and has a competitive spirit woven into her genes.

Lord Botham’s Test cricket career spanned 102 matches over 16 seasons, notching 5,200 runs which included 14 centuries.

The all-rounder also took 383 international test wickets, taking 10 in a match four times, and is a former world record holder for the number of Test wickets taken.

Beefy also turned out for his beloved Scunthorpe United FC against AFC Bournemouth in 1980, coming on at 3-0 down to be part of a thrilling comeback that ended in a 3-3 draw.

Imani-Jayne’s dad Liam played for Welsh rugby union side Cardiff for three seasons and was capped by England Under-21s, before spells at Newcastle Falcons and Leeds Tykes.

He then spent a couple of seasons at various rugby league clubs and crossed sports like his father before him, playing county cricket for Hampshire.

Imani-Jayne’s brother James continued the family’s impressive, competitive history having represented Wales at under-18 and under-20 levels. He was called into the senior squad last year for the Autumn International series.

With such a pedigree the student beauty queen might feel she has more than a sporting chance of winning the Miss England crown later this year.
