Cruel driver leaves baby seagull ‘mangled’ in road after driving over it ‘on purpose’

A baby seagull was killed after a driver “squished” it in a road “on purpose”.

The defenceless nestling was alone in the middle of a road in Looe, Cornwall, on Tuesday night when a silver car came along and deliberately ran it over.

Eyewitness Emma Selby, from the neighbouring town of Liskeard, said she was parked up when she spotted the little bird walking across the road with its mum.

But after one car drove up the narrow, the adult gull flew off, leaving it to fend for itself.

Shortly after, another car approached and showed the protected creature no mercy, CornwallLive reports.

“It was driving very slow, like around 5mph, it is a very narrow road,” Emma said.

“He (the driver) was going very slow and the baby seagull was in the road and then he purposely drove over it.

“You could see that he purposely drove over this baby seagull and it came out the back of his wheel.

“It was just mangled, it cried, then it was just dead – squished on the floor.”

She said the driver left the scene but returned after turning around.

Emma said he then drove down to one of the residential parking spaces on the seafront.

She said: “It was strange, I don’t understand why, especially at that speed, he would purposely line up his wheel right where the seagull was and just squish it. It was horrible.”

Emma said the incident happened at about 7.45pm.

She said she will be reporting it to the police as soon as possible.

All species of gull are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which means it is against the law to injure or kill them

Anyone convicted of cruelty against a seagull could be fined up to £5,000 and potentially jailed for up to six months.
