Emergency services rescue man who ‘jumped in water for £100 bet’ at shopping centre

A man needed rescuing after jumping into murky waters near a shopping centre, allegedly for a “£100 bet”.

Emergency services rushed to Princes Quay shopping centre in Hull last night (Saturday, June 5) after reports that a man had jumped into the water.

The incident took place at around 10pm, with crowds of people putting a pause to their night out in the city to watch the spectacle.

Three fire appliances and police blocked off the street while fire crews used a boat to reach the man and rescue him from the cold water.

After half an hour, the man eventually made it out safe and well.

On-lookers claimed a group had dared the man to jump in the murky depths of the quay “for a £100 bet” reward.

A spokesman from Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “We got the call at 10.08pm and we had three appliances and an overboard called out.

“We rescued the casualty and left the incident with the police and ambulance service. We left just after 10.30pm.”

When police attended the incident the man had been rescued from the water and was safe and well.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “At 10.10pm yesterday (June 5) the fire service alerted us to a man in the water at Princes Quay.

“By the time officers arrived the man was out of the water and was safe and well.”
